The rodeo. It is a banquet of events featuring man and beast in an athletic interplay that is as exciting as it gets. Whether calf-roping, bronco busting, bull riding or lariat tossing, the men and women who display their riding and cow handling talents in the rodeo are truly extraordinary athletes. After bringing the herd into towns, cowhands would demonstrate their horse riding and roping skills in an event which grew in popularity. It is believed that the first formal rodeo competition took place in Cheyenne in 1872; today there are about 2,000 rodeos held annually throughout the country.
